Post Hormonal Birth Control Syndrome

Never heard of it? You probably have.

PHBCS is a term used to describe the group of symptoms that come about 4-6 months after stopping any form of hormonal contraception eg. The oral contraceptive pill, IUDs, implants, transdermal patches etc.

While there are often many symptoms that can come about while being on the pill, coming off it can be just as disruptive.

Generally it should take 2-3 months for your hormones to rebalance after coming off the pill but for some that's not the case.

Some PHBC syndrome symptoms include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Infertility
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Changes to body composition- weight gain, weight loss
  • Mood disruptions- heightened anxiety, panic attacks, low mood, depression
  • Hair loss
  • Skin changes- usually acne but can also be super dry skin
  • Lowered immune function- increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections
  • Digestive symptoms- constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, gas
  • Complete loss of periods (post-pill amenorrhea)
  • Rebound of the symptoms they originally went on the pill- heavy or painful symptoms, acne etc.

Sufferers often feel overwhelmed as they feel like their only solution is to go back on the pill but thankfully there are lots of ways we can restore hormonal balance and resolve these conditions using natural medicine, even if it's been months or years since the symptoms started.

The other thing about this condition is that it is SO common! Once you start talking about it most people can think of at least one person they know who is struggling with some form of PHBC syndrome.

I hope we can spread the word to as many women as possible, who often feel helpless, to let them know that there are other safe and effective solutions to these symptoms.

“After experiencing first-hand how effective natural medicine and dietary changes can be for treating anxiety I couldn’t believe that I had suffered in silence for so long without it. It was this realisation that set me on my mission to spread the word and help others to better manage mood so that they could stop wasting time and get on with life without unwanted thoughts slowing them down.”

  • “Stress in my relationship lead to separation, which lead to me leaving a secure job to juggling 5 different jobs. The stress I had been under for 10 years had been taking a toll. I had a chance meeting with my Naturopath and it was a huge life changing experience. Jess prescribed certain tablets and monitored my progress. I feel less stressed, calmer, clearer thinking and I feel much more balanced emotionally, physically and spiritually. I will never be able to explain to her how much she has helped me. I only wish I had found her sooner”
  • "When I came to see Jess I was stuck on my path in moving forward with some health issues. Jess proved to have impeccable knowledge and was warm and comforting to talk to throughout the consultation. Since seeing her, I have seen a drastic shift in the right direction.
    I highly recommend her."
  • "For the last few years Jessica has been a pivotal part of my healthcare. She is passionate and knowledgeable. Jessica goes above and beyond when it comes to patient care. Jessica was able to help me straight away with a pregnancy vitamin for myself and one for my husband too. Once I got pregnant Jessica provided me with other vitamins that I would need to support my pregnancy. I have been in close contact with Jessica throughout the pregnancy and when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes she was able to assist me with foods that would help with controlling my glucose levels. I cannot recommend Jessica more highly as a naturopath. She is approachable, knowledgeable and realistic."
  • "I've been a patient of Jess's for a few years and couldn't recommend her more! Solving health issues, both physical and mental. I Work terrible hours in a stressful environment, was constantly sick and I think on the cusp of burnout- but after being dragged to a consult, I found her very caring, holistic approach to health helped enormously. The appointments are surprisingly in depth and pinpointed what I needed to get back on track. (Thanks again Jess!)"
  • "I had issues with joint inflammation and muscle soreness. Some supplements and new foods added to my diet have done wonders in managing both of these issues. I couldn't be happier with the help and care I've received."
  • "My health before coming to Re Med was quite poor and having IBS I felt disheartened as I thought I wouldn’t find a solution as to why it was happening. My health issues impacted me most as I didn’t know exact what food or ingredient was causing my issues. I would get regular bowel motions and that was a hindrance if I was going somewhere or had an appointment. My experience working with my wonderful practitioner Jess has been nothing but pleasurable she listens to me and and cares about me and my health which is a great help. Since working with her my health has greatly improved and I have had regular and better bowel movements. Being on holistic herbal supplements is also good knowing there are no chemicals and the taste isn’t bad, I am glad they are helping me with my IBS. I am extremely lucky that I found Jess I greatly appreciate her help, she has been exceptional. I would definitely recommend Jess to my family and friends."
  • "Jessica listens, the first sign of caring. She is passionate about her work. She is respectful of older people. She has a great future."
